I presume consciousness is still a vague term which has hardly found a meaningful explanation as of yet. After all, we are not even aware of the fact that whatever we perceive or feel is even remotely related to reality. For the present discussion, I agree and assume that consciousness is the mechanism that makes an entity self-aware amongst other criteria as well.
Sometimes, we may tend toward consciousness - but the knowledge of achieving consciousness is elusive. Even if we reach consciousness - can we be conscious enough to realize our consciousness with our consciousness? It is impossible to fully understand the mechanisms that drive the human brain and our emotions and thought processes along with it.
Whatever is thought or known is the result of numerous complicated neural interactions within the substance that lies enclosed within our cranium. If a part of the cranium tries to comprehend the mechanisms and equations that govern the entire brain, it would be analogous to trying your best at pushing a car forward while sitting in the car itself!
